Ben is scared. His hockey team is about to play the toughest, meanest, ugliest hockey team in the competition and Ben... has been selected to his team's goalie. Rats are gnawing at his guts, he thinks he'll pee his pants and knows he's nothing but a yellow-bellied chicken. Will Ben survive?

Ben saw his mate David waving at him.

He raised his hand to wave, as he did his best cowboy walk.

"Hey Benny! Why're ya walking like a duck?" yelled David.

"Bet he's peed his pants!" cried someone else.

The rest of the boys burst into fits of laughter.

"Real cool cowboy- NOT," thought Ben.

The rats in his stomach started chewing his guts again.

It felt like they were eating his muscles bit by bit. Chew, chew, chomp. Chew, chew, chomp.

He moved into the goalie position just in front of the goalposts.

He hoped the chestplate would stop his guts splattering onto the ground

when the rats ate through his skin.

BOOK REVIEW

Yellow-Bellied Goalie

by Tracy Hawkins

Reviewed by Helen Evans

If you are looking for a sporty book for the 8 to 10 year olds, Yellow-Bellied Goalie is an excellent choice. It is perfect for kids who play hockey or a team sport.

Many coaches give children the chance to experience playing in different positions and that is what happens to Ben. This week he has to be goalie and he's scared. Tracey captures that feeling of despair kids will be so familiar with when faced with something new. Will he let his team down? He feels like a chicken and then his friend teases him as he tries to walk in his full playing gear. If only he could run away. The opposing team is all fired up, especially tough Jack. But everyone is in for few surprises.

This story moves along quickly and has the right mix of humour and tension. You don't need to be a hockey buff to enjoy it.

P.S. Tracey's name should be spelt like this with an 'e.' The 'e' got lost in the publishing!
